Unarmed Truth - Day 74

"I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant." Martin Luther King, Jr. Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, Oslo, Norway, 1964.

Arcade - Day 71

Monticello Arcade Norfolk Virginia. Designed by Neff & Thompson in the Beaux Arts Classical style, the Monticello Arcade was built in 1907 and is one of only two shopping arcades in Virginia. It features elaborate terra cotta decorative elements, and, at the time it was built, the center skylight was one of the country's largest. One of my favorite buildings in Norfolk and a must see for architecture and historic building fans.

Day 26 - Happy Birthday American Caesar

Today marks the 136th birthday of General Douglas MacArthur. On my way to and from work I walk by the memorial bearing his name. Like most heroes and great leaders, he was a complex person. William Manchester's biography entitled American Caesar suggests that "MacArthur was an analogue of Julius Caesar, a proposition he supports by noting their great intellect, brilliant strategic generalship, political ambition, magnanimity as conquerors, and shared tragic flaw of hubris."

One of my favorite management quotes from the great general is "You are remembered for the rules you break."

Putto

Putti proliferate in popular culture: on buildings, in decorative arts, on greeting cards - a popular purveyor of love. But in Art through the ages, the putto has been a curious little figure, often reflecting philosophy, theology and literature of the time. The putto in Renaissance art was a winged or wingless, male child figure.

Resourcefulness - Day 129 #CY365

Being resourceful, I put an old Hurst T-Handle from my 1973 Mustang Mach I to good use. Meet the ultimate in performance mice, the Logitech-Hurst Darkfield T-Handle. Canon 5D Mark II, 1/160 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 800 photographed in a light tent with two LED Litepanels for illumination.
