365 Again - Day 1

So I'm starting off 2014 with the goal of completing another 365 Project - one photo per day for the entire year. I did this beginning in 2009 and continued each year through 2012, 1,461 straight days of photos and blog posts. I slowed down a bit in 2013, posting occasionally to CIOPhoto.com but getting back into the swing of things in December by posting daily pictures of Norfolk at night. So come along for the ride through 2014. I love getting comments and please free free to offer photo suggestions, especially challenging ones.

Garden of Lights

Garden of Lights at the Norfolk Botanical Garden - We made our annual trip through the Garden of Lights tonight with our grandson Robert. Here are a few highlights from this year's display. Almost all of the displays are designed and custom crafted by Garden staff and volunteers. Canon 5D Mark II.

Garden Glass

As a fan of both art glass and the Norfolk Botanical Gardens, it's really special when the two come together. The "Refections of Nature, Glass Sculpture Exhibit" runs through August 18th at the gardens. Canon G15, 1/500 sec @ f/3.5, ISO 200.

Santa's Catapult Launch

Santa launches off the deck of the USS Harry S. Truman at the Norfolk Botanical Garden's Garden of Lights display. Cindy and I took Robert through the garden's tonight after Thanksgiving dinner. The light display is special but even better when enjoyed with a six year old. Canon 7D, 1/50 sec @ f/2.8, ISO 800, 55mm focal length.

Tree of Light

- The tree of light at the Garden of Lights display at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. This section of lights was sycn'd to the holiday sound track broadcast on a low power FM radio station. The light show is worth the trip and the $10 buck a car admission. Canon 7D, 1/20 sec @ f/2.8, ISO 800.

Renaissance Lion

- This lion is one of eight that are part of the Renaissance Court and Garden at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. They guard the reflecting pool and fountain. Modeled along the classic lines of the Italian Renaissance of the late 16th century, this area features all of the trademarks of that period. Canon 7D, 1/5 sec @ f/32.0, ISO 100 mounted on a tripod.

Lotus Bees

- A lotus flower always attracts my camera's attention. This one was being worked hard by two busy bees. Canon 7D, 1/30 sec @ f/32.0, ISO 400, 100mm macro lens.

Garden Walk

- We did the Full Moon Garden Walk tonight at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens with our friend Margaret. The cloud cover obscured the moon but it was still a nice evening for a stroll through the amazing gardens. As always I learned a lot from Perry Mathewes our guide. I managed to capture a few photos in spite of the low light and steady breeze like this columbine. Canon G11, 1/100 sec @ f/4.5, ISO 800, in macro mode.

Rose Garden

- Went to the Norfolk Botanical Gardens today with Cindy and our friend Margaret. It was cool and windy but we still enjoyed our walk through the thousands of roses at the Bicentennial Rose Garden, It's November and the roses still look spectacular, tonight's forecast with a low in the 30's might change that. Canon G11, 1/2000 @ f/3.2, ISO 200 in macro mode.

Yellow

- Photographed these tiny yellow flowers a few weeks back at the Hunter Savage Colonial Garden at Norfolk Botanical Garden. I'm not sure what they are called but each small yellow blossom is about the size of a pencil eraser. Canon 7D, 1/80 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 400, 100mm macro lens.

Stone Bridge

- The Stone Bridge at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. The cloudy day created a giant "softbox" in the sky allowing the light colored bridge to photograph well with the surrounding fall landscape. On a sunny day it is difficult to get the bridge without blowing out the highlights or leaving too many dark shadows. Canon 7D, 1/60 sec @ f/11.0, ISO 400, with a tripod.

HDR Gardens

This is a simulated high dynamic range (HRD) photo of the Hunter Savage Colonial Garden at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. This was a cloudy overcast day which made it ideal for capturing details, I just had to avoid the blah sky. This image is a blending of three exposures, one taken at the camera's meter reading, one two stops under exposed and one two stops over exposed. I did the blending with Photomatix Pro. This allowed me to avoid blowing out the highlights on the white gazebo and fence while capturing details in the shadows. Not a great picture but an interesting lesson for me in HDR. Canon 7D, 1/6 sec @ f/14.0, (metered exposure) ISO 400, 70mm focal length, mounted on a tripod.

- Gomphrena globosa, commonly known as Globe Amaranth or Bachelor Button, is an annual plant that grows up to 24 inches in height. This cultivar is white but the most familiar variety is the true species with magenta bracts. Canon 7D, 1/50 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 400, 100mm macro.
