Morning Skyline

The Norfolk Virginia eastern skyline shortly after sunrise on a cloudy but unseasonably warm Monday morning. Freemason Street Baptist Church in the center foreground, the Basilica of Saint Mary just to the right, the eastern branch of the Elizabeth River with the railroad bridges raised to the far right, and Virginia Beach's Westin Town Center in the distant left background seen between the two NSU dormitory towers. Canon G15, 1 sec @ f/7.1, ISO 100.

Full Moon Rising

- Noticed a great full moon rising tonight on my drive home from work. By the time I got home the clouds had moved in but I was able to catch the bright moon through openings in the cloud cover. Canon 7D, 6/10 sec @ f/10.0, ISO 200, 200mm focal length mounted on a tripod.

Clouds

- This was a sunrise I captured back in the winter. The photo is way underexposed and nicely reveals the depth and texture of the early morning clouds. Canon 7D, 1/160 sec @ f/16.0, ISO 200.

Powerful Sunset

From 2010 Blog
This sunset was changing by the second. The bright oranges were gone completely with in minutes of taking this shot. One problem with taking sky photos in an urban setting are the power lines and poles, so I tried to make this silhouette of the power pole a part of the composition rather than miss the shot. Canon 7D, 1/1250 sec @ f/2.8, ISO 400, 50mm prime lens.

362 - Cloud Bands

From 365 Project
A cold front moved into the area around sunrise today. With it came these bands of clouds making for an interesting winter sky. The picture is taken looking east into the rising sun silhouetting the bare tress in the foreground. Canon 7D, 1/6400 sec @ f/6.3, ISO 640.

273 - Reach for the Sky

From 365 Project
This crane appears to be reaching for the sky. It was actually lifting new roofing materials to the top of Virginia Air & Space Center in Hampton Virginia. With the cooler weather this week, we have had deep blue skies and lots of amazing fluffy clouds. Canon G10, 1/250 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 200. Taken through an open sun roof while sitting at the stoplight at Settler's Landing Rd and Bridge St.

270 - Float Through

From 365 Project
The clouds appear to be floating right through the SunTrust Building in downtown Norfolk Virginia. The picture was taken from Town Point Park on the Elizabeth River on day with a bright blue sky and big white fluffy clouds. Canon 40D, 1/1000 sec @ f/11.0, ISO 200, 31mm focal length.

196 - Sunroof

From 365 Project
While driving home from work today I was sitting at a stoplight when I happened to glance up through the sunroof. The low afternoon sun was breaking through this tree and casting an interesting color aura. Lucky for me, the camera was right there on the passenger seat, got off three frames before the light turned green. The picture I planned for today will have to wait for another day. Canon 40D, 1/125 sec @ f/14.0, ISO 100, 55mm focal length.

174 - Chrome

From 365 Project
The weather today was just perfect. Not too warm, blue sky with lots of big fluffy clouds. The chrome on this shined up Harley caught my eye and I captured the sky's reflection in it. Canon 40D, 1/3200 sec @ f/5.0, ISO 400 (oops - should have had this set to ISO 100 in the bright sun), 55mm focal length. Converted to black and white using Silver Efex Pro in Photoshop Elements.

138 - Whisps

From 365 Project
Thin whisps of clouds appeared as a cold front moved two days of rain out of the area. Soon the heat and humidity of a mid-Atlantic coast summer will make blue skies and thin whispy clouds a rarity. Canon 40D, 1/400 sec at f/22, ISO 100, 70mm focal length.

95 - Wild Blue Yonder

From 365 Project
It was raining below in Georgia but high above the clouds at 35,000 feet the sky was deep blue over a sea of puffy white. Canon G10, 1/800s at f/7.1, ISO 100, shot through the plane window.

87 - Air Force Memorial

From 365 Project
The Air Force Memorial in glows against low hanging clouds and mist. Located on a promontory in Arlington, Virginia, overlooking the Pentagon and adjacent to Arlington Cemetery, the memorial's three 270 feet tall stainless arcs evoke the spirit of flight. Taken with a Canon 40D, 5.0s exposure at f/8.0, ISO 200, 28mm equivalent focal length, mounted on a tripod.

78 - Contrails in the Sky

From 365 Project
After five days of rain, we awoke this morning to blue skies and sunshine. Numerous contrails crisscrossed the blue sky as I departed for work. Canon 40D, 1/15s at f/13.0, ISO 100, 17mm focal length with polarizing filter.

75 - Cloud Light

From 365 Project
Virginia's tallest building, the 38 story Westin at Town Center in Virginia Beach lights the low hanging clouds on a rainy evening. I tried unsucessfully to make this photo on February 28th but the rain and wind was just too strong. Captured in a light rain with a Canon G10, 2 second exposure at f/8.0, ISO 80, 34mm equivalent focal length mounted on a tripod.
