181 - Don't take my Kodachrome away

From 365 Project
They didn't listen to Paul Simon! Last week Kodak announced it was ending the production of Kodachrome transparency (slide) film after 74 years. Remember all of those great National Geographic photos you loved - Kodachrome. I have hundreds of slides I took using this great film and my trusty Olympus OM2 which I got 32 years ago. So I picked some of the last Kodachrome and will be shooting it with the OM2 over the next few months. I'm sure some photos will make it to the blog, although somewhat delayed since it takes about a month to send it away to only processor left. Canon G10, 1/60 sec @ f/4.0, ISO 200, macro mode with a three light setup, two strobes and a Litepanel Micro.

180 - White Wings

From 365 Project
This young great egret was testing his wings in a large nesting colony located in the Campostella Heights neighborhood in Norfolk Virginia. There were hundreds of egrets in nests high up in the pine trees. While beautiful to watch, the nesting colony can make a real mess. Some residents appear to have cut down or severely trimmed tress to rid themselves of the messy birds. Canon 40D, 1/500 @ f/9.0, ISO 400, zoom at 400mm with a 1.4x extender.

179 - Cool Blue

From 365 Project
Not only does this two zone wine fridge keep your wines at the right temperature, it also has the coolest blue glow. Canon G10, 1/5 sec # f/3.2, ISO 200, 19mm equivalent focal length.

178 - Rain Chain

From 365 Project
This hammered cup copper rain chain replaces the traditional downspout. We visited the Southern Living Showcase Home at the Riverfront community in Suffolk Virginia today. The rain chain caught my eye and was pretty cool and interesting. They say it makes a great running water sound during a rain. Canon G10, 1/500 sec @ f/2.8, ISO 200, 11mm equivalent focal length.

177 - Spider Hole

From 365 Project
The spider's web marks the entrance to this hidey-hole in the very old brick and iron fence enclosing the grave yard of old Saint Paul's Church in Norfolk Virginia. Crumbling bricks and mortar, peeling paint and rusting iron add to the charm of the local landmark. Canon 40D, 1/25 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 200, 45mm focal length.

176 - Artichoke Flower

From 365 Project
Until tonight I had never seen an artichoke flower. Thanks to Margaret who mentioned this one blooming at the Fred Hewett Center on Botetourt Gardens in the historic Ghent community of Norfolk, Virginia. Canon G10, 1/60 sec @ f/4.0, ISO 800, 15mm equivalent focal lingth in macro mode with the built-in flash at -1 stop flash exposure compensation.

175 - Home of the Whopper

From 365 Project
The Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk Virginia has an amazing collection of art glass including this piece entitled Whopper by Dante Marioni. At 44 inches tall, this elegant vase is the largest blown glass object in the museum's vast art glass collection. The Chrysler is participating in "Art of Glass 2" a multiple venue show running throughout southeastern Virginia this summer. It has a great temporary exhibit of art glass by Lino Tagliapietra. Canon 40D, 1/250 sec @ f/5.0, ISO 800, 17mm focal length.

174 - Chrome

From 365 Project
The weather today was just perfect. Not too warm, blue sky with lots of big fluffy clouds. The chrome on this shined up Harley caught my eye and I captured the sky's reflection in it. Canon 40D, 1/3200 sec @ f/5.0, ISO 400 (oops - should have had this set to ISO 100 in the bright sun), 55mm focal length. Converted to black and white using Silver Efex Pro in Photoshop Elements.

173 - Hydrangea

From 365 Project
This pink hydrangea flowerhead reflects the higher alkalinity in the soil in this part of my yard. This old plant has been in the yard for at least 30 years. The flowerheads start out bright pink and gradually turn more purple. If you look close you will notice that each bloom has a small separate center flower. Canon G10, 1/125 sec @ f/2.8, ISO 400, in macro mode.

172 - Dad

From 365 Project
I took a lot of pictures today but decided to do some restoration work on an old photo of my dad for today's post. This photo of Edward H. Sullivan was taken in 1945. Dad retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years and served in France and Germany with the Eight Infantry Division in WWII and during the Korean Conflict with the 25th Infantry Division. He was twice awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Valor and also the Combat Infantry Badge and the Purple Heart with several Oak Leaf Clusters. Dad celebrated his 18th birthday in France in August 1944, six weeks after coming ashore at Normandy as a 17 year old soldier. He passed away on January 15, 2005. Happy Father's Day dad, I sure miss you.

171 - Night Spider

From 365 Project
No it's not creepy crawlie week nor is is "David's Bug Period". I have photographed this little spider several times since first seeing him among the daylilies about a month ago with no luck in getting a good picture. He has more than doubled in size since then, so I tried again tonight with the tripod, remote control and the micro litepanel. Success! Canon 40D, 1/15 sec @ f/4.5, ISO 800, Canon 85mm lens on the life-size macro adapter. No bugs tomorrow, I promise.

170 - I wouldn't hurt a fly.

From 365 Project
With all of the news about the fate of one fly this week, I couldn't resist this little guy for today's post. These tiny green flies sit nice and still while having their portrait made. A super macro shot hand held with with the Canon MP-E 65mm lens. The depth of field with this lens is measured in millimeters but the results are worth the effort. Canon 40D, 1/50 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 800.

169 - Faded Glory

From 365 Project
One of my neighbors painted this flag on their fence in the days just after 9/11. Flags, feelings of national pride and patriotism were wide spread. Just as the flag on this fence, much of those have faded in the ensuing years. Canon 40D, 1/60 sec @ f/4.0, ISO 400, 85mm f/1.8 prime lens with a little help from the camera's pop up flash.

168 - The Grand Marshall

From 365 Project
The Grand Marshall daylily leads the parade of color in my garden. Canon G10, 1/250 sec @ f/4.0, ISO 400, 25mm equivalent focal length in macro mode, illuminated at night by a Litepanel Micro LED light.

167 - Prime Corners

From 365 Project
This is an extreme angle look at the southeast corner of City Hall in Hampton, Virginia. The 1976 modern stone building is a striking architectural landmark in one of the country's oldest cities dating 1610. The unique design creates many more prime "corner offices" with great views of the harbor and downtown. Canon G10, 1/500 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 200, 11mm equivalent focal length, converted to black and white using Silver Efex Pro plug-in in Photoshop Elements.

166 - Lightning Bug

From 365 Project
Up close and personal with this lightning bug. They started appearing last week and I see more and more each night. I hope to get a long exposure with several glowing at once but I need to wait until there are more of them. Canon G10, 1/60 sec @ f/4.0, ISO 400, 25mm equivalent focal length, on camera flash with flash compensation at -1 stop.

165 - Osprey

From 365 Project
I was watching this Osprey circling and diving for fish just off the beach at Sandbridge, Virginia today. She has just caught a fish and is flying off with it in her talons. The shot is not tack sharp focused as I would have liked but she was moving fast and I was happy enough with it to feature it as today's post. Canon 40D, 1/500 sec at f/13.0, ISO 200, 254mm.

164 - Alabama Jubilee

From 365 Project
The Alabama Jubilee was one of the first Daylilies I collected about five years ago. Even though I have many varieties now, these remain one of my favorites. I look forward to mid June every year for the big orange blossoms to appear. These plants multiply quickly and have nice green foiliage all year. Canon 40D, 1/125 sec @ f/18.0, ISO 800, 50mm compact macro lens.

163 - Bubble, Bubble

From 365 Project
My grandson Robert and his Uncle Mike having a good time with bubbles in the front yard today. Canon G10, 1/160 sec @ f/4.0, ISO 200, 13mm equivalent focal length in macro mode.

162 - Pinpoint

From 365 Project
Work continues on the new gas line behind my office. This week they have been welding together more sections of the two foot diameter pipe. Last week they hit a water main a few blocks from here and flooded out the railroad underpass. This pipe is now a couple of hundred feet long and when you look through it, the other end is just a pinpoint of light. In fact its a green porta potty. Canon G10, 1/250 sec @ f3/5, ISO 200.

161 - The Commodore

From 365 Project
I went to the Commodore Theater in Portsmouth Virginia tonight to see the movie Star Trek. Great movie! The Commodore is a classic 1940's Art Deco theater that has been restored and shows current first run movies. This photo was taken from our table looking towards the curtain clad screen. What a way to see a movie, big screen, THX sound and lots of elbow room. Canon G10, 1/3 sec @ f/3.5, ISO 200, 11mm equivalent focal length. Camera sitting on a rail triggered with the self-timer.

160 - 73774

From 365 Project
No I didn't have too much caffeine and yes the blurred effect is intentional. You too can have fun with blurred action shots. If your "point and shoot" camera has the "fireworks" mode, use that in a dark room with an intense light source and some creative movement. Neon works really good. This is the front of a vending machine at work. Canon G10, 1/2 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 80, 30mm equivalent focal length.

159 - Insulator

From 365 Project
This antique glass insulator was featured in a photo I posted back in March. This is one of my favorite finds and I have had it for over 30 years. I found it on the beach near the Virginia-North Caroline border. If you look carefully you will notice near the top evidence from sand pitting in the glass. Also look for the glass screw threads in the center where it once screwed down on a wooden peg on the old telephone pole. The image was lit from below with a Litepanel Micro. Canon G10, 1/320 sec @ f/3.5, ISO 400, 22mm in macro mode.

158 - Japanese Maple

From 365 Project
This delicate Japanese Red Maple was backlit by the late day sun. Japanese maple trees are prized for their lacy, or “dissected” leaf type. Canon G10, 1/320 sec @ F2/8, ISO 400, 11mm equivalent focal length in macro mode.

157 - Melt in Your Mouth

From 365 Project
Not in Your Hands! Colorful M&M's seemed like thing to do on a rainy and overcast Saturday. Did you know they come in many unusual colors? Check out this photo from my trip to M&M Store in Times Square last year. Canon 40D, 1/5 sec @ f/9.0, ISO 200, 50mm compact macro lens.

156 - Storm a Coming

From 365 Project
Summer storms roll in from the west. This shot was taken looking directly east towards Virginia Beach, VA. Almost 3.5" of rain fell with this storm, flooding area streets and trying up rush hour traffic for hours. Canon G10, 1/250 sec @ f/4.5, ISO 200, 54 mm equivalent focal length.

154 - North Shore

From North Shore
I had the opportunity today to visit a magnificent private garden off North Shore Road in Norfolk Virginia. Created by Nancy the home's owner and a master gardener, the variety of plantings, the wonderful palette, textures and contrasts were a photographer's and would be gardener's dream. This is one of the flowers I captured today, check out some others in my Picasa web album. Thanks Lin for the invitation. Canon 40D, 50mm compact macro, 1/500 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 100.

153 - Mr. Peabody

From 365 Project
You'd need the Way Back Machine to save this old camera store. The former Camera City location in Hampton Virginia is reduced to dust and rumble and loaded into a bright shiny demolition company trailer under the watchful eye of Mr. Peabody. While Camera City survives at a new location around the corner, I could not resist the metaphor for what has happen to local camera stores. Canon G10, 1/400 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 100, 44mm equivalent focal length.

152 - Fallen Sentinel

From 365 Project
The old fire hydrant stood watch for many years at this abandon industrial complex. Looks like a careless driver dealt the fatal blow. Canon G10, 54mm equivalent focal length, 1/500 sec @ F/5.6, ISO 200.
