A Little Bit - Day 4 #CY365

Today's theme was "A little bit", so Cindy suggested a little drill bit. This is a 1/16" drill bit photographed with a macro lens at 4X magnification. It illustrates the smallness of the drill bit with small specks of dust along the edges and the extremely shallow depth of field a macro lens creates. At this 4X magnification and f/5.6 aperture the depth of field (area in focus) is about the width of drill bit itself.

Starry Night in Glass

This is the purple swirl hand blown glass ornament my grandson Robert made this past Saturday with a lot of help from Josh and the glass artists at the Chrysler Museum Glass Studio in Norfolk Virginia.

Schlumbergera

Schlumbergera, a.k.a. the Christmas Cactus. These cacti are species found in the coastal mountains of south-eastern Brazil. Plants grow on trees or rocks in habitats which are generally shady with high humidity and can be quite different in appearance from their desert-dwelling cousins. Hybrids like this one are popular house plants.Canon 7D, 1/80 sec @ f/16.0, ISO 800, 100mm macro lens, two LED Litepanels used for illumination.

Patiently Waiting

This big lady is patiently waiting for her next victim. She built a large web just outside the window of my home office. I took this photo through the glass window, so I was able to get pretty close. Hope it doesn't creep you out too much. Canon 7D. 1/80 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 800, 100mm with one LED Litepanel for illumination.

Sage

This is Berggarten Sage a beautiful sage plant with the same flavor as common sage but bred not to flower so that leaf production will not stop. This perennial has beautiful large rounded green-gray leaves and is often used as an ornamental planting at the corners of beds and along walkways. Canon 5D Mark II, 1/200 sec @ f/6.3, ISO 800, 100mm macro, one LED light panel.

The Well-Behaved Liriope

My liriope muscari is full of tall purple blooms this year. Often refered to as the well-behaved liriope because it is the “clumping” kind that does not spread by runners and basically stays where you put it. It shares all the good qualities of the spreading kind — incredible toughness and adaptability — without the invasive behavior. My green-and-white variegated variety of this plant brightens up the borders in my shady backyard. Canon 5D Mark II, 1/125 sec @ f/6.3, ISO 800, 100mm macro, one LED Litepanel for illumination.

Like Links

Wore my new "Like" links to work today. A few people noticed and commented. I got snickers and smirks around the dinner table at home tonight. Not everyone appreciates geek humor. They are very versatile, if your feeling good - wear them in the thumbs up position, if the day is not going well or you're stuck in a boring meeting, just twist around to the thumbs down position. Simple binary messaging. Canon 5D Mark II, 1/125 sec @ f/4.0, ISO 800, 100mm macro lens and little extra light from an LED Litepanel.

Genuine Microsoft

I had some other choice words to describe Microsoft over the past few days as I battled an uncooperative Windows 7 operating system on my main photo editing computer. I am finely giving in to a reinstall of the OS and all of the work that goes with getting the applications back. Luckily all of my photos and other data are backed up so the only loss was lots of my time. This is my original Windows 7 DVD with all of its Microsoft holographic logos. Canon 7D, 1/250 sec @ f/5.6, ISO 800, 100mm macro with one LED Litepanel.

Dark Knight Rises as a PEZ

I figured tonight was the appropriate time for a Batman and Catwoman PEZ dispenser photo. Not heading out for a midnight showing of the Dark Night Rises but I can't wait to see the third film in the current millenium series. LEDs

A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor light source. When a light-emitting diode is switched on, electrons are able to recombine with electron holes within the device, releasing energy in the form of photons. This effect is called electroluminescence and the color of the light is determined by the energy gap of the semiconductor. LEDs present many advantages over incandescent light sources including lower energy consumption, longer lifetime, improved physical robustness, smaller size, and faster switching. These LEDs are arrayed in one of my Litepanels that I use often for illumination in my macro and still life photographs. Source - Wikipedia. Canon 7D 1/1000 sec @ f/4.0, ISO 400.
