Find Your Cool

- "Find Your Cool" in downtown Durham North Carolina. This is a row of buildings fronting on Main Street with the motto of downtown painted in the old style on the brink. Canon G11, 1/640 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 400.

1919

- 1919 Monticello Avenue in Norfolk Virginia has been the location of Doumar's BBQ and Cones drive-in since 1934. The restaurant is a local legend known for its barbecue, hand made ice cream codes, and curb service. It was featured on the Food Network's series Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, hosted by Guy Fieri. Eighty-eight year old Albert Doumar still makes ice cream cones daily at the restaurant on a cone making machine invented by his uncle Abe that dates from 1905. I stopped by tonight after work for some take-out. My grandson Robert is our family's 6th generation customer. My favorite Doumar's desert, the "Ringo", is a hot fudge sundae made on top of bed of crunched up cone chips. I think I'll feature a photo of one of those soon for my venture into food photography. Who Could Ask For Anything More?

From 2010 Blog
- Festival food vendors offer a gamut choices especially for meat lovers. This vendor at the Stockley Gardens Art Festival is appealing to many varied tastes. There were more a few turkey leg diners strolling the booths. I saw most of the usual festival offerings but no fried Snickers bars, what's up with that. So I had to make due with a $4 lemonade. The French Bakery

From 2010 Blog
The French Bakery & Deli! is a Norfolk institution located on Granby Street just before the Lafayette River bridge in the Riverfront neighborhood commercial district. I visit every year for a small, yet very expensive holiday fruit cake that's the best in town. Famous for their hot pastrami sandwich and notorious for their pricing, there seems to be no middle ground among online reviewers - you either love it or hate it. I certainly love the fruit cake and the classic signage out front. Canon 7D, 1/125 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 200.

352 - "Eventually...Why Not now?"

From 365 Project
These old advertising signs were revealed by a building demolition on Norfolk's Granby Street a few years ago. The Gold Medal Flour ad has the slogan "Eventually...Why Not now?" which the company used from 1907 through the early 1950's. The clown dangling the string to a kitten is an interesting touch. The other billboard reads: "The House of Hofflin - The Middy Blouse Man - Famous Hofflin Suits for Girls - Sailor Suits Made to Order." The billboards may be of the World War I time frame. They are in great shape having been shielded by an adjoining building for years. Canon G10, 1/500 sec @ F/5.6, ISO 400.
