50 - Home of the Cone

From 365 Project
The famous "Doumar's Drive-In" in Norfolk, Virginia serving hand-rolled ice cream cones, just as Abe Doumar inventor of the ice cream cone did over a century ago. Doumar's is a regular lunch stop for me and has served six generations of my family. Canon G10, f/8.0, 1/160s, ISO 200, 30mm equivalent.

49 - Wall of PEZ

From 365 Project
Another one of my geeky hobbies is collecting PEZ candy dispensers. I've been at it for 13 years and these are some of the over 500 PEZ in my collection. As you can tell from the photo, lighting a wall of PEZ is not easy. Click on the photo to get a higher resolution version from my Picasa web albums and then zoom in and look for your favorite characters. Taken with a Canon 40D, 1/13s, f/4.0, ISO 400, Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 zoom at 18mm.

48 - Cold War Relics

From 365 Project
This Nike Ajax surface to air missile is on display at the Air Power Park in Hampton, VA. At its peak in the late 1950's there were over 240 "Nike Sites" around the U.S including several in the Hampton Roads area. The sites began to be phased out in the early 1960's with the last decommissioned in 1974. Located near the NASA Langley Center this park was once a gleaming display of rockets and planes from the Cold War and Space Race decade. After many years outdoors the paint is peeling, metal is rusting away and our interests have shifted elsewhere. Canon 40D, 1/60s, f/16, ISO 100, Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 zoom at 17mm with a Singh-Ray LB warming polarizer.

47 - NC Stonehenge

From 365 Project
Towering almost 200 feet above the fields east of Elizabeth City, NC one of four massive concrete column pairs that remain from the world's largest wooden building. Completed in 1943, Airdock #2 was part of the Weeksville Naval Air Station for lighter than air ships, better known as blimps. This hanger which was destroyed by fire in 1995 had 7.5 acres under its giant wooden roof. The slightly smaller but still huge Airdock #1 remains nearby and today supports commercial air ships. Canon 40D, 1/60s, f/16, ISO 100, Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 zoom at 17mm with a Singh-Ray LB warming polarizer.
