Lantana Bee

- Another macro photo for my bug week. The Lantana really attracts the bees and butterflies. Canon G10, 1/2000 sec @ f/3.5, ISO 400 in macro mode.

Hot Now

- There's nothing like a hot Krispy Kreme doughnut. The melt in you mouth sugar bomb is a Southern tradition. It takes super human powers to pass up when the "Hot Now" sign is lit up. Canon G10, 1/15 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 80, mounter on a tripod and taken in a light rail. The picture is just OK but the doughnuts were outstanding.

Happy 400th!

From 2010 Blog
- Happy 400th Anniversary to the City of Hampton Virginia. Founded on July 9, 1610 - yes that's right 16-10, 10 years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. This is a picture inside of the fourth St. John's Parrish Church built in 1728. The town was originally called Kecoughtan after the Native American community located on the same site, it was later renamed to Elizabeth City, then Southampton and finally Hampton. Canon G10, 1/60 sec @ f/4, ISO 400, with flash.

Entrance Lion

From 2010 Blog
- Guarding the main entrance at Biltmore House near Ashville North Carolina are two massive carved stone lions that survey visitors with magnificently serene countenances. Carved of Rosso di Verona marble that is from near San Ambrogio Valpolicello in Italy, these lions are believed to date to the late nineteenth century and were not put in place until late 1899 or early 1900. Canon G10, 1/1000 sec @ f/4.5, ISO 80, converted to black and white.

Magic Lamp

From 2010 Blog
- Proteus is a legendary narrow-gauge tank engine with a magic lamp hung upon his funnel. Legend has it that should someone finds the lamp, their wishes will be granted. Proteus is the newest addition to our Thomas and Friends railroad and made the trip out for dinner one night with his chief engineer. Canon G10, 1/60 sec @ f/2.8, ISO 400, in macro mode.

Beach Bridge

From 2010 Blog
This is the pedestrian bridge crossing Route A1A, aka "the Beach Road". The bridge connects the oceanfront beach with the pool deck at the Westin Beach Resort in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Canon G10, 1/1250 sec @ f/4.0, ISO 80.

Impatiens

From 2010 Blog
New Guinea impatiens were introduced in the U.S. in the 1970's and are a popular annual. They are often seen in planters and beds at many commercial establishments. These were in planters around the pool deck at the Westin Beach Resort in Ft. Lauderdale. I liked the color and slight luminescence of these blooms in the morning light. Canon G10, 1/2000 sec @ f/3.5, ISO 200 in macro mode.

Pool Ball

From 2010 Blog
This beach ball was pushed across the pool by the breeze. I thought it would bring a nice warm feeling to a cold and wet March day. Canon G10, 1/2000 sec @ f/4.5, ISO 200.

At the Gate

From 2010 Blog
Waiting at the gate at the Jacksonville airport as reflected in the front element of the 70-200 zoom lens on my DSLR. JAX is a pretty cool airport, well as much as an airport can be cool. I'll probably share a few more shots I took using the gear combination captured in this photo in future posts. Canon G10, 1/80 sec @ f/3.2, ISO 400 in macro mode.

Vacation Sunset

From 2010 Blog
This is the companion sunset picture to the sunrise picture on the February 28th post. I took this one on the same day as the beach sunrise picture. However this was near the end of our trip as our return Southwest flight was beginning to make its descent into Norfolk. I always take pictures from the airplane and they rarely meet my expectations because shooting through the multilayer Plexiglas windows with lots of vibrations make a sharp picture almost impossible. Even though its not super sharp and underexposed, I still liked this image. Canon G10, 1/40 sec @ F/6.3, ISO 400.

Pool Colors

From 2010 Blog
The South Florida sun and wind combined to create some interesting light patterns in the swimming pool. Of course this meant taking the risk of carrying the camera into the pool to get the picture. Picture captured, camera made it out high and dry. Canon G10, 1/1250 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 200.

737 Luv

From 2010 Blog
Southwest Airlines only flies one type of aircraft, the Boeing 737. These are lights illuminating the recessed troffer ceiling panels looking towards the front of the plane. Southwest achieves great cost efficiencies by flying on one type of aircraft, one of many reasons they have been a consistently profitable airline. Canon G10, 1/640 sec @ f/2.8, ISO 400, 2 stops under exposed..

Angle Volutes

From Monticello Arcade
One of the four iconic columns flanking each interior entrance with angle volutes and female masks at the Monticello Arcade in Norfolk, Virginia. An arcade is the more stylized, ornamented antecedent to the modern shopping mall. Most arcades are covered by a series of arches supported on columns or piers. The Monticello Arcade is one of only two of its kind in the state of Virginia. Canon G10, 1/60 sec @ f/5.0, ISO 200 converted to black and white.

Color of Love

From 2010 Blog
Red is the color of romantic love. My sweetheart prefers tulips to roses, so tulips it is. Our 39th Valentine's Day together. Canon G10, 1/13 sec @ f/2.8, ISO 400, in macro mode.

Snowy Day

From 2010 Blog
Virginia Beach had snow for the third Saturday in row. Three Canada Geese forage on the site of the 5th Courthouse of Princess Anne County, now part of the City of Virginia Beach. The 1778 Courthouse was torn down 40 years ago but the 1769 Georgian style Pleasant Hall in the background has been restored and is now owned by Kempsville Baptist Church. Canon G10, 1/500 sec @ f/5.0, ISO 400, on camera flash fill

A Fixture

From 2010 Blog
I take a lot of pictures of light fixtures. Something about the way the light and geometry of the fixture work together. This one was at a Homearama 2009 house we visited this past October in Culpepper Landing, Chesapeake Virginia. Even though it was a brand new house, the fixture already has a dead fly. Canon G10, 1/2000 sec @ f/3.2, ISO 400.

Table Light

From 2010 Blog
Regular followers of this blog know that I like taking pictures of glass and capturing the ways different kinds of light are refracted. This is a macro shot of the small oil lamp on our dinner table tonight. We visited Burton's Grill in the Hilltop section of Virginia Beach for dinner tonight. The food and service was great but so was the chance to get a cool photo for the day. BTW - It's Restaurant Week in Virginia Beach this week so who knows, more dining and photo ops await. Canon G10, 1/20 sec @ f/2.8, ISO 400, in macro mode.
