Descending

- Our office building in Norfolk Virginia used to have some pretty dingy stairwells. Well last summer they got a fresh paint job, steps and all. So dingy is the last word the comes to mind now. Canon G11, 1/100 sec @ f/4.0, ISO 800.

Primary Steps

- The back stairs at my office got a new paint job this past summer. The striking primary colors of red, yellow and blue now assaults your eyes in the formerly dark and dingy stairway. Canon G11, 1/3 sec @ f/4.5, ISO 400.

gohrt.com

From 2010 Blog
- Shameless promotion of Hampton Roads Transit's website gohrt.com. I'm pretty proud of what we do with the website and all of our technology projects. My small team of techno magicians are amazing! These are HRT promo prencils illuminated with an LED alternate lightsource to give it that cool glow. Canon 40D, 1/50 sec @ f/4.0, ISO 800, 50mm macro.

342 - Wheels & Tires

From 365 Project
A set of wheels and tires from a 15 passenger van await their fate in the early morning sunshine. The tire sitting partially under the one in the foreground is most certainly headed to the recycler since the tread has completely separated from the tire. The others will likely head back out on the road after a good balancing. It's all part of routine "PM" (preventive maintenance). Canon G10, 1/5 sec @ f/6.3, ISO 200 converted to black and white using Silver Efex Pro in Photoshop Elements..

338 - Cylinder Head

From 365 Project
Close up of a cylinder head and its values stems and springs. This one is from a diesel engine used on a transit bus. The cylinder head sits above the cylinders and consists of a platform containing part of the combustion chamber and the location of the valves and spark plugs. Canon 7D, 1/8 sec @ f/4.0, ISO 400, 50mm focal length.

296 - First and Last

From 365 Project
These are some of the first buses acquired by the Virginia Electric & Power Company, one of the forerunners of today's Hampton Roads Transit (HRT), parked in front of the trolley barns and bus garage on 18th Street in Norfolk Virginia. The photo is dated June 12, 1927.
From 365 Project
82 years later three current HRT buses are parked in the same spot at the 18th Street bus garage. The garage will soon be torn down and replaced with a new garage. The two pictures show the first and last buses to operate at the 100 year old facility. Canon 40D, 1/100 sec @ f/11.0, ISO 100, 8mm fisheye lens.

260 - Step Up

From 365 Project
There's nothing like a dark, cinder block walled, metal staircase, illuminated by a single bare bulb florescent fixture, with a card security door awaiting to give that step up to the challenge feeling. This is the back stairway at my office that greets me every day as I arrive to make a difference. Canon G10, 1/10 sec @ f/4.0, ISO 200.

212 - Service Line

From 365 Project
Hampton Roads Transit's MAX Express buses await the afternoon pullout in the service lanes at the bus garage in Norfolk Virginia. The silver and blue express buses are the newest in the HRT fleet and sport cool mobile WiFi Internet hot spots, one of CIOPhoto's projects from his real job. Canon 40D, 1/125 sec @ f/7.1, ISO 125, 70mm focal length.

112 - Earth Day

From 365 Project
I work in public transit so I want to highlight public transit's contribution to saving our planet. An individual switching to public transit can reduce his or her daily carbon emissions by 20 pounds; that’s more than 4,800 pounds a year. This is more than the combined carbon emissions reduction that comes from using energy-efficient light bulbs, adjusting thermostats, weatherizing one’s home, and replacing an older refrigerator with a high efficient refrigerator. Canon G10, 1/200 sec at f/8.0, ISO 200, 12mm equivalent focal length/

106 - Peeling Paint

From 365 Project
The random nature of the paint peeling against the symmetrical pattern created by the underlying bricks caught my eye. This brick wall is over 100 years old and has obviously had more than a few coats of paint. But it will have no more paint as the building is scheduled for demolition later this year. Canon G10, 1/20sec at f/3.5, ISO 400. Converted to black and white using Silver Efex Pro.

92 - Lost Spokes

From 365 Project
A row of unclaimed bicycles await their fate near my parking space at work. Many bikes are left on bus racks each week. If you left your bike recently on a Hampton Roads Transit bus, it may be one of these. Lost and found procedures can be found here. Canon G10, 1/60s at f/6.0, ISO 400, 11mm effective focal length. Converted to B&W using Silver Efex Pro in Photoshop Elements 6.0.
