Revival-Gothic

From 2010 Blog
A new photo today. Thomas U. Walter, the architect for the U.S. Capital dome, designed the magnificent revival-Gothic sanctuary building at Freemason Street Baptist Church in Norfolk Virginia, which is now on the National Historical Register. Canon G10,1/320 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 100.

355 - Barren

From 365 Project
The barren tree branches of my neighbor's pecan trees are illuminated by the golden light of the early morning sun. The cold clear air provides for a nice blue sky backdrop. Canon 7D, 1/60 sec @ f/11.0, ISO 200, 30mm prime.

350 - First Lutheran

From 365 Project
The First Lutheran Church has been featured in my blog before on day "216 - Elvis Sighting". This photo of the classic Gothic Revival church was taken from the Maury Avenue side looking towards the front of the church. The bright afternoon sun nicely illuminates the wonderful stone work. Canon G10, 1/800 @ f/4.5, ISO 200.

344 - Chim Chiminey

From 365 Project
The red chimney and the stark primary colors of the sky and the house invoked memories of seeing the movie Mary Poppins many years ago. The bright yellow house is at the corner of Colley and Boissevain Avenues in Norfolk's Ghent neighborhood. Canon 7D, 1/800 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 100.

337 - Nose Job

From 365 Project
The bow of the USS Wisconsin at its pier in Norfolk Virginia. This is not the original bow. In May 1956 she collided with destroyer USS Eaton in a heavy fog off Virginia. The Wisconsin's bow suffered heavy damage, the Eaton fared much worse. A 120-ton 68-foot long section of the bow of the uncompleted battleship Kentucky was used to replace Wisconsin's damaged bow resulting in the largest "nose job" in history. The Wisconsin's nickname "WisKy" comes from shorted versions of Wisconsin and Kentucky. Canon 7D, 1/125 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 100, 27mm equivalent focal length.

332 - Happy Go Lucky

From 365 Project
These sculptures always make me smile. They are located at the Collins Square Shopping Center in the Thalia area of Virginia Beach, Virginia. The bright primary colors against a clear blue sky help to evoke the feeling of happiness. Canon 1/500 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 100 with infill flash.

273 - Reach for the Sky

From 365 Project
This crane appears to be reaching for the sky. It was actually lifting new roofing materials to the top of Virginia Air & Space Center in Hampton Virginia. With the cooler weather this week, we have had deep blue skies and lots of amazing fluffy clouds. Canon G10, 1/250 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 200. Taken through an open sun roof while sitting at the stoplight at Settler's Landing Rd and Bridge St.

270 - Float Through

From 365 Project
The clouds appear to be floating right through the SunTrust Building in downtown Norfolk Virginia. The picture was taken from Town Point Park on the Elizabeth River on day with a bright blue sky and big white fluffy clouds. Canon 40D, 1/1000 sec @ f/11.0, ISO 200, 31mm focal length.

196 - Sunroof

From 365 Project
While driving home from work today I was sitting at a stoplight when I happened to glance up through the sunroof. The low afternoon sun was breaking through this tree and casting an interesting color aura. Lucky for me, the camera was right there on the passenger seat, got off three frames before the light turned green. The picture I planned for today will have to wait for another day. Canon 40D, 1/125 sec @ f/14.0, ISO 100, 55mm focal length.

183 - The Boathouse

From 365 Project
The Boathouse, once a rockin' place for concerts is rapidly rotting away. It was a popular Norfolk Virginia concert venue in the 80's and 90's. With its low ceiling and packed crowds it was a favorite venue for bands and concert goers alike. Converted from an old riverfront warehouse, the building is now condemned and appears to be sinking into the river. While it is missed by many it has been adequately replaced by the NorVa. Canon 40D, 1/160 sec @ f/20.0, ISO 200 with a polarizer.

182 - HOH

From 365 Project
It was a spectacular summer day so I stopped to take this photo of the Harrison Opera House in Norfolk Virginia on the way back from lunch. Usually mid-day photos are kind of washed out but this building was radiant in the bright sun. Originally a WWII era theater known as the Center Theater, it was renovated in 1993 and is home to the Virginia Opera. Canon 40D, 1/100 sec @ f/11.0, ISO 200, 70mm focal length with a two-stop polarizer.

95 - Wild Blue Yonder

From 365 Project
It was raining below in Georgia but high above the clouds at 35,000 feet the sky was deep blue over a sea of puffy white. Canon G10, 1/800s at f/7.1, ISO 100, shot through the plane window.

78 - Contrails in the Sky

From 365 Project
After five days of rain, we awoke this morning to blue skies and sunshine. Numerous contrails crisscrossed the blue sky as I departed for work. Canon 40D, 1/15s at f/13.0, ISO 100, 17mm focal length with polarizing filter.
