Did you see it?

- Did you see the incredible sunset tonight? A front came through just in time to open the skies for the setting sun in the west to illuminate the clouds retreating to the east. Five minutes after I took this photo at 5:43 the sky was completely gray. Canon G11, 1/640 sec @ f/2.8, ISO 400, taken looking through my windshield.

Couple in Arms

- This is a new 5 ton, 36-foot tall stainless steel sculpture entitled "Couple in Arms" by Maryland artist Rodney Carroll. It is located in Norfolk Virginia near the intersection of Ballentine and Virginia Beach Boulevards and is a part of the Broad Creek Linear Park. The setting sun cast a nice warm glow necessitating a need for me to stop and make a photo on my way home from work today. Canon G11, 1/200 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 200.

Reflected Sunset

- Glorious sunset this evening reflected in the chrome exterior of the No Frill Grill at Hilltop in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Canon G11, 1/800 sec @ f/3.2, ISO 400.

Tower Sunset

- The setting sun nicely silhouetted this power line tower. Canon G10, 1/640 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 200.

Chesapeake Bay Sunset

From 2010 Blog
- Sunset across the Chesapeake Bay from Marina Villages at Baycreek in Cape Charles, Virginia. Canon G11, 1/60 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 200.

Long Creek

From 2010 Blog
Long Creek in Virginia Beach looking west towards the Lynnhaven River about 45 minutes past sunset and during a light shower of rain. I like the purple sky that occurs after sunset. This would have been a much better photo 15 minutes earlier. The evening light changes rapidly, so it's always worth hanging around after the sun sets. Canon G11, 1 sec @ f/4.5, ISO 400, camera resting on a dock box.

WisKy Shiloutte

From 2010 Blog
- The battleship USS Wisconsin is silhouetted by the setting sun. The Wisconsin is known by its nickname "WisKy" because the damaged bow was once replaced with the bow of the unfinished USS Kentucky. It berthed in Norfolk Virginia adjacent to the Nauticus, National Maritime Center. It is open to the public. Canon 40D, 1/800 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 200, zoom at 17mm wide angle.

Cranes

From 2010 Blog
- Some would say the official bird of the Norfolk Virginia waterfront is the "crane". This photo was taken from the Elizabeth River Ferry landing in downtown Norfolk looking towards the Berkley section of the city. The five tower cranes are part of Metro Machine's Berkley shipyard. Between the shipyards and their tower cranes and the port terminals and their gantry cranes, the waterfront that was once the home of ships masts and funnels, is now dominated by cranes. Canon 40D, 1/250 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 200.

White Rain

From 2010 Blog
- An afternoon thunderstorm and a small beam of evening sunlight help to make this an interesting picture of white azaleas. Canon G11, 1/125 sec @ f/4.5, ISO 200.

Looking West

From 2010 Blog
- Looking towards the Hudson River along W. 48th Street in New York City. The Belvedere Hotel is on the right with its great 1920's Art Deco exterior illuminated by the late afternoon sun reflected off of the glass towers along Eighth Avenue. Because of all the glass in New York, it's not unusual to see the late afternoon sun coming from the east rather than the west. Canon 7D, 1/125 sec @ f/18.0, ISO 400.

Harbor Sunset

From 2010 Blog
- The sun sets over the Elizabeth River and the Portsmouth Virginia waterfront. The container cranes to the right are at Portsmouth International Terminals and APM Terminals Virginia. The Portsmouth Naval Hospital is the large silhouette on the left. Canon 40D, 1/50 sec @ f/14.0, ISO 200, 17mm focal length.

Little Hand

From 2010 Blog
- This little hand belongs to my 3 year old grandson Robert. As you can tell they are busy little hands. He was playing with a small patch of sunlight that was landing on the dinner table. In the evening the sun sets fast and the patch of light was there one minute and gone the next. In a few years when I look back at this picture it will seem that he grew up just as fast. Canon Powershot SD1100 IS, 1/250 sec @ f/2.8, ISO 400, 40mm equivalent focal length in digital macro mode.

Vacation Sunset

From 2010 Blog
This is the companion sunset picture to the sunrise picture on the February 28th post. I took this one on the same day as the beach sunrise picture. However this was near the end of our trip as our return Southwest flight was beginning to make its descent into Norfolk. I always take pictures from the airplane and they rarely meet my expectations because shooting through the multilayer Plexiglas windows with lots of vibrations make a sharp picture almost impossible. Even though its not super sharp and underexposed, I still liked this image. Canon G10, 1/40 sec @ F/6.3, ISO 400.

Powerful Sunset

From 2010 Blog
This sunset was changing by the second. The bright oranges were gone completely with in minutes of taking this shot. One problem with taking sky photos in an urban setting are the power lines and poles, so I tried to make this silhouette of the power pole a part of the composition rather than miss the shot. Canon 7D, 1/1250 sec @ f/2.8, ISO 400, 50mm prime lens.

Empire Sunset

From New York City
This photo was taken from the observation desk atop the Empire State Building at sunset in April 2008. I liked the way the stainless steel jumper cage reflected the evening sunset. I first thought this visit was just going to be another touristy thing but it turn out to be an amazing experience; one I would highly recommend. Canon Rebel XTi, 1/100 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 800, zoom at 17mm focal length.

Crescent City Connection

From 2010 Blog
I took this picture in February 2007 of the setting sun over the Crescent City Connection bridge in New Orleans. It is the last bridge to cross over the mighty Mississippi River before it empties in to the Gulf of Mexico. It was the only passable bridge out of New Orleans immediately following Hurricane Katrina. Canon Rebel XTi, 1/2000 sec @ f/7.1, ISO 400, 50mm focal length.

263 - Back Bay Sunset

From 365 Project
Sunset over Back Bay in Virginia Beach, Virginia. We spent the afternoon and evening with a drive in the country ending up at Sandbridge. Along the way we visited two wineries in Knotts Island North Carolina. All in all, a very nice day and evening. Canon 40D, 1/20 sec @ F/5.0, ISO 200.

243 - Sunset Beach

From 365 Project
It's rare to see a sunset over water on the East Coast but you can at Sunset Beach near Cape May, New Jersey. I took this photo about 5 minutes before the sun dipped into the bay. You can see the wreck of the concrete ship Atlantus just offshore. Canon 40D, 1/125sec @ f/11.3, ISO 100, 17mm focal with a 1 stop polarizing filter.
