Day 7 of 365 - Hypomnemata - Rosa, Kate, Lili, Regina, and Aennie

by artist @raestern on display at the Simon Family JCC in Virginia Beach.

“In this work, Stern revisit the photographs of five young women, whose photographs she collected for the Outside Time installation. The illuminated youthful gazes, are contrasted by the tragic events that later unfolded in their lives.”

“To create the large scale translucent paper, Stern manipulated the thickness of the pulp without using any pigment. The daylight shines through the thinner parts of the handmade paper, exposing the image.”

See her immersive installation titled Outside Time on view at @virginiamoca through March 6th.

Day 5 of 365 - Pavement Poetry

To My Love After George Floyd
I couldn’t sleep
last night.
Why not?
I lied awake, listening
to you breathe.
What?
I wanted to savor it.
Oh?
Yes, it’s now
the thing
I love most about you.

Project Trifecta

I had the honor to be a part of the team that created The Tide light rail and the Slover Library and now part of the turnaround at Elizabeth River Crossings. Couldn’t pass up the opportunity to capture all three in one photo.

Twitterversary - Day 86

Twitter reminded me this morning that today was my 9 year anniversary on the social media network. So I snapped this picture of the nine key on my trusty HP-11c calculator to go along with my Tweet.

New Calvary - Day 75

52 years ago Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. came to Norfolk Virginia to preach at his friend Rev. Milton Reid's installation as pastor of New Calvary Baptist Church. Milton Reid was a well known early Virginia civil rights activist. Dr. King was scheduled to return to preach again at New Calvary Baptist in early April 1968 but postponed the visit to go to Memphis to support the sanitation workers strike where he was assassinated on April 4, 1968. New Calvary Baptist is located at the corner of Calvert St. and Virginia Beach Blvd. in Norfolk Virginia. In the background of this photo can be seen historic First Calvary Baptist Church, just to the left out of the frame is the historic Attucks Theater.

Unarmed Truth - Day 74

"I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant." Martin Luther King, Jr. Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, Oslo, Norway, 1964.

Arcade - Day 71

Monticello Arcade Norfolk Virginia. Designed by Neff & Thompson in the Beaux Arts Classical style, the Monticello Arcade was built in 1907 and is one of only two shopping arcades in Virginia. It features elaborate terra cotta decorative elements, and, at the time it was built, the center skylight was one of the country's largest. One of my favorite buildings in Norfolk and a must see for architecture and historic building fans.
